My favorite holiday tradition is the simple act of sharing a holiday meal with friends and family. Getting to visit with family and sharing special holiday foods that usually are only served once a year is a special treat- and now hat I am one of the “adults” i enjoy getting to make some of those special holiday foods to share with all my family. The Turkey for sure is special, but we make homemade cranberry sauce and roasted potatoes. For dessert we have a rice pudding made from and old scandenavian recipe, with one whole almond hidden in it and the person who finds it- get a prize. these are the holiday traditions that have been around since i was a child- that bring comfort and a feeling of love each year!

My family starts the Christmas season by watching the movie “Christmas Story” on Thanksgiving day. All year long I’m in search of stocking stuffers for our whole family. On Christmas day we start our gift-opening-frenzy with everyone checking out what “Santa” left in their stockings. It’s so much fun! I love it!!

My favorite tradition starts on Black Friday when my daughter and I get up and go shopping for flannel and fleece. Every member of the family gets a pair of flannel pj bottoms and a fleece blanket for Christmas. We try to match the fabric to the persons personality. We then buy a t shirt to match the fabric and the younger members of the family get to decorate the tshirt.
This Christmas I made 23 pj bottoms for my family and also made an additional 20 pairs for my sister-in-laws special needs kindergarten class.
I once suggested that we not do pjs any more and you would have thought I was canceling Christmas.

The party is for their dolls so we play games..eat tiny treats and exchange gifts with each others dolls. The dolls each had a tiny stocking which Santa came to Mimis house and filled..they trimmed a doll size tree and the girls sang Christmas songs.. It so much fun seeing Christmas through the eyes of children. They even got Mimi a doll ..Her name is Lizzy-beth and she got lots of beautiful gifts from their dolls! We will do this every year until they want to stop…which they said I have to be very very old because their little girls will want to come too.

So each year the three sisters, and two brothers make ever effort to continue the tradition. We even bring a small Christmas tree with battery lights because my mother loved lights. Though our spouses and our children do not always come, nor can each of meet each year, whoever is closest continues the tradition. We miss them very much and appreciate all the warmth and love they give us and taught us to give to others. I wish each of you a wonderful and happy year. Keep your traditions close to your heart because these are what gives you comfort when your love ones are gone.

Once we have chosen our tree we get it cut down and hauled to the shed where they level it and shake all the critters out. We enjoy warm cider and let the kids pick out their yearly addition to our tree ornaments. I’ve found that the AG doll clothes I make are great stocking stuffers. It was a big dissapointment when my machine broke down at the end of November before I had finished my Christmas projects.

…each year we make little gifts for each of my granddaughter’s (she’s 11) )American Girl dolls. This year she told me because I’ve taught her so much…that “she’s got it..but if I could watch over her shoulder she’d be so happy…”

  157. My favorite tradition is the family going out to the Christmas tree farm. This tree farm is special to me because I was first taken to this very farm when I was a baby and that has continued yearly each year and continued after I was married and had my own children. And this year was even more special as we took our 3rd Granddaughter with us for her very first Christmas and first visit to see Santa Claus. The same family has owned this tree farm all these years as well and is now being run by the 4th generation in their family. There were about three years when I was not able to go (health reasons) and it just didn’t feel like Christmas because we hadn’t gone out there.

  158. Deb Mckenna /

My favorite holiday tradition is church with the entire family on Christmas Eve evening, followed by riding around looking at Christmas lights and then home for a dinner of cheese and crackers and other snack foods while watching “A Christmas Story” on TV. Even though my kids are grown now they still look forward to it every year and won’t make other plans!

My favorite holiday tradition is doing a Secret Santa with a neighbor. We choose a different one each year; this year’s gifts went towards a friend who had a family member who was sick with a cold on Christmas Day. We pick a small gift for the family and then “white elephant” type gifts for each individual family member. (This year, the kids received rag dolls in crazy colors, while the parents received a can of soup and hot chocolate.) We then put all the gifts in one box, wrap it, and drive over to their house. We drop it off on the front porch and play Ding Dong Ditch! Then we drive away and get back home before they can find us. It’s crazy fun!

  170. Renee H-C. /

My favorite Holiday Tradition is…. Christmas breakfast in pajamas! 175. My favorite holiday tradition is going to a walk-through live nativity called journey to Bethlehem. It takes you about an hour to walk through the whole thing and it the setting is in Bible times. You go in a group and you have a worker who pretends to be a caravan leader and he takes you to “pay” your taxes in Jerusalem. Along the way you meet the three wisemen, visit the shepherds, and once you are done with your journey you see baby Jesus in the manger. It is AMAZING!

Then stockings are hung by the fire before going to bed and on Christmas morning we discover Santa has been there and continue with American Christmas traditions.

  178. My family started a new Christmas tradition about 5 years ago. Every year in Nov. we get together and decide how we want to decorate our tree. Each year it is a new theme. Over the years we have done tree’s covered in all candy, birds and nests, favorite photographs…We start decorating on Dec. 1 and add new things to go with our theme every day until Christmas eve. Last year was the toughest! We decided to put things on, that had meaning to us. By Christmas eve we had DVDs, books, mini paintings, awards, socks, etc. (yes, I said socks. They were her favorite pair??) Because of Super Storm Sandy we were not able to do our usual tradition, so we just decorated pine cones on Christmas eve. We still had such fun together and that is what really matters! Who know what we will come up with next year??

It was an effort to finally get going to look at the lights. However, Santa always just happened to have been at our house while we were gone. Whew!! some years that took quite some sycronizing (?). Our new tradition is watching the kids figure out how to do that with their little ones. Sure is fun having the little ones around.

We sing songs along the way and stop at homes of friends. Lisa has booklets printed up with all the words so anyone can keep up. And, sometimes we try to sneak in some modern songs as well. So much fun. My daughter looks forward to it and so do my husband and I.

My favorite holiday tradition is each year me, my husband and our 4 kids take on a service project of some variety for the holiday season. We have done bottle drives and given the money to the poor. We have raised money for warm mittens and taken them to the homeless on the streets on Christmas Day. Our project for next year is to decorate a tree for our local “Festival of Trees” which raises money for the Primary Children’s Hospital. Guess what our theme is going to be…American Girl Dolls. We are going to raise money to purchase 2 AG dolls to put under the tree and we are going to sew 2 outfits a month that we can hang on the tree as decorations. We have it all planned out. If someone has a cute idea for a Tree Skirt pass it on to me.
